Bathroom Renovation

  Automation

Mains voltage halogen lighting controlled by X10. I installed a Secret Switch in the wall behind a chrome blanking plate. The switch has been modified by the manufacturers for momentary operation. It is connected to an LD11 module mounted in the loft.

  Renovation

The wet trades were supplied by a local builder and the bathroom suite was supplied and fitted by Dolphin Bathrooms. The whole room had to be completely gutted right back to the bare bricks and ceiling rafters!

Here's the sensor head for the secret switch, - its about the size of a 50p. This is placed behind a chrome plate that I use as a touch switch (although it can be buried inside a wall or hidden behind a tile etc. because it senses proximity rather than touch, it does not need to be visible at all). The low-voltage cables connect back to the control unit.   This is the complete assembly for the lighting control. The secret switch sensor is mounted on the rear of the chrome plate, the LV wires then connect it to the control box, (middle), which then connects to the momentary switch inputs of an X10 LD11 module. I plan to replace it with CBUS switching shortly.     This is what we inherited with the house.. - Nasty!... turquoise fittings, tiles literally falling off the walls, plaster all shot, the window was almost falling out of its frame, and carpet! - (Ugh!)   Part way through. All the old stuff is out. As you can see some of the internal walls were lath & plaster partitions, while others were bricks & mortar. Also, although it's not shown here, just to make things even more interesting, one of the walls is curved as well.

There's a home-made switch place on the wall by the bath which has 8 non-latching pushbuttons mounted on it. Currently not being used, but I plan to hook them up to the HA controller and program them to operate various media functions, like channel change and volume control and so on.   There are a pair of stereo speakers mounted in the ceiling. They're positioned to be as far away from the shower as possible, and I  used ones with nylon rather than paper cones. These will be wired back to the stereo in the main bedroom, and will allow us to listen to radio & TV, CD's or MP3's     Because the room is L-shaped, we have lots of corners, and not very much straight wall space. Hence we've had to utilise a lot of corner-units, like this corner mounted basin, and the wall cupboard above.   This is the same corner as above after the renovation. The L-shape of the room made the choice of a corner bath the most practical use of the space (it's only a small room).
